Hot Tracks Series Question Empty Hot Tracks Series Question

Post by cuppy1991 Tue 12 May 2015 - 23:27

Did the Hot Tracks Series stop at 23-7 then pick back up at 26-1? Can't seem to find any info on anything in between.

Thanks for any help on this

Hot Tracks Series Question Empty Re: Hot Tracks Series Question

Post by Spin A 12 Inch Fri 22 May 2015 - 8:42

Real answer,

I'm sure Kerry will back this up as he is probably the most knowledgeable Hot-Tracks collector on the forum with more real vinyl and CD copies than just about anyone.

When Hot Tracks started in 1981 (keep the date in mind) they "kind of" copied Disconet in some ways and some things they did different.  Disconet had volumes, and started in October of  1977, each volume had 13 issues. Disconet's were not released on a monthly basis, they were supposed to be generally released every 4 weeks. (52 weeks divided by 4 = 13 issues over the course of a year.) They did not follow this every 4 week formula strictly, some months you would get 2 issues. Another thing with Disconet is the "Volume Number" has nothing to do with the year, all Disconet Volumes overlap into different year numbers.

Back to Hot-Tracks

Similar to Disconet's "Volumes", Hot-Tracks named/ called their release's a "Series"  with the first record coming out in January of 1982. Hot-Tracks issues were also not released  monthly.  You could generally expect a new issue every five to six weeks, some years a little more, some years much less, they were not consistent, However with the Hot Tracks  series they are always tied to a "Year" meaning (example) all "Series Six" issues came out in 1987 and .. so-on.

The missing Series numbers is because Hot-Tracks went out of business towards the end of (2004 - 2005), with the last issue 23-7. Over the years they started to call the original "Series" - "Mainstream Dance", and is generally considered the same thing. This last issue was more than likely scheduled for a 2004 release, but with the label in disarray, it was released a month late.

For two years the label / series  was silent while it was out of business. In 2005 and 2006 nothing was released until "Select-Mix / Remix Holdings decided to start up the series again in 2007. The missing numbers are because of the two years they were silent without any issues. When they restarted the "Series" they used the numbers that would have naturally occurred if nothing had happened.

That's where the missing issues went.  ........... Wink Wink

Unlike the Disconet remix service label that embraced the use of the number 13 and even had an issue called Lucky 13.

Mixx-It , Discotech and Twitch Recordings would completely avoid having an issue number thirteen, they considered it to be to Un-Lucky a number.

Ironically, in a strange twist of fate. Disconet would be the first of many remix-service labels to close down during the 90's. Maybe they should have avoided number 13 as well.

To me, the avoidance of the number 13 is pretty pointless. Hotels do it as well with their room numbers. The way I see it, if I'm in room 15 (most hotels have odd numbers one side of the corridor and even the other) then I'm in room 13!
