Dance Music “Mix” Fans Lose An Early Pioneer Of The Craft

I Just found out about this while researching something else, and kind of felt like posting this, because it kind of hit me on a personal level seeing that at one time I “casually” knew this person, and have fond memories of this time period, when a lot of us Dj’s from the Boston area looked up to him as one of the best night club Dj’s.

A little bit of Mix-Ology history, I guess for those that might be interested.

Although by name he is not that well known by today’s standards of popularity, fans of “mixed” dance music lost one of it’s early pioneers recently. Danae Jacovidis of Boston passed away on Febuary 24th 2012.

He might not have had many songs or records to his credit, but he was one of the early pioneers of the craft and very popular in the Boston area for many years. Probably his most recognizable work / mix was mixing "Born To Be Alive" by Patrick Hernandez. He was also one of the original early mixers for Disconet, known for his 2 versions of the “At Midnight Medley’s” and one of the early founding members of the Boston Record Pool.

One of his lesser known efforts was also working with fellow Boston Record Pool member Arthur Baker, when Arthur was first starting out with his first vinyl release & we all know how famous Arthur went on to be.

He played almost exclusively at and for gay night clubs. Personally I only got to hear and see him spin a few times through events sponsored by the Boston Record Pool & Mix Sets, he did for radio stations, back the late 70’s 80’s time frame, he was excellent behind the turntables and considered one of the best dj’s locally.

This is one of his mixes for Disconet. Maybe not considered that great by today's mixing standards, especially when you consider everything is done nowadays with software, but this guy could really mix a fantastic set >"live" < with two turntables like no one else back in the day. Try to put into perspective as you maybe listen to this mix. It goes back quite a few years. Long before there were places like Hot-Tracks and Ultimix records when every one was still trying to learn how to do this kind stuff and club Dj's were first getting solicited for there input on what "would" and "would not" work on the dance floor.

Just a note on the video, who ever made it used a "slightly" wrong image for the disconet mix. Originally on Disconet Volume 3, Program 12 from late 1980
