Anyone?!!!!
We are almost 2 months offline now and I go into a fresh round of dentist torture.
So far the only alternative to continue the forum is USENET, other options seem to be to risky.
What you people think? Send out a letter asking who wants to help setting up a usenet forum, call it quits for the forum or....? We need to do something I think.
I miss the forum, I miss the interaction, I miss the helping & I miss the friendship.
Dirk

Re: Anyone?!!!!
I'm in 100% on the usenet option. I've been using it to fill in a lot of gaps in my collection of things I was looking for. Some of the files were on those servers over 900 days ago, and it is a relatively fast download. It costs me nothing, and even thought I may not get huge files in 3 minutes like I normally would, it works similar to an FTP with flow control, pausing, long file retention. I have no complaints thus far. I think that willy's proposal of how to use unique file generated names, and every file being password protected works best. This way no one can search for anything we post, and even if they find it, they can never open it and never link it back to anyone how has uploaded it. Really need to send out a mass email to get everyone to respond to this, I don't visit this forum daily as I'm sure other don't either.....so that is how you will be get better response.

Re: Anyone?!!!!
I use it too but only download stuff. Problem is not everyone can use it. You have to pay for it. Here in Holland most providers support it (not all) but only with a few days retention. So one needs to pay to get older files.

Re: Anyone?!!!!
Ronald, there is a website that gives you a daily code with some decent speeds for free. The only thing that is a pain in the ass is that you need a new id and password every 24 hours. Really not that big a deal, but zero cost. As xusenet is I think still overing 1Mbps connections for life for free. When we get there, we'll take a look, but just so you know, it shouldn't cost a thing......just a minor obstacle, but certainly better than nothing.

Re: Anyone?!!!!
If this is the only solution then Usernet will be the turning point of this forum, but remember one thing, even Usernet is a server where you upload and download (at least I think!), So watch that could make the same order megauplod, said I am always willing to Alliance.

Re: Anyone?!!!!
This is not the case in the Usenet scenario, I do like your idea of suggestion, but the issue with that is that it is P2P, and would always required any given member to be online at all times or some predetermined time to make the share possible. It will never fall under the megaupload scenerio because there is no central server to take down. We've looked at this carefully because of the long time retention of files, the anonymity to the users directly, and the ability to keep all legal azzhats from coming after people for helping the hobbie out.gurge71 wrote:If this is the only solution then Usernet will be the turning point of this forum, but remember one thing, even Usernet is a server where you upload and download (at least I think!), So watch that could make the same order megauplod, said I am always willing to Alliance.

I've ripped this from wiki to help simplify how usenet really works and some of how we can keep a very low profile while enjoying the hobby.
Ripped from wiki:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Removal of copyrighted content from the entire Usenet network is a nearly impossible task, due to the rapid propagation between servers and the retention done by each server. Petitioning a Usenet provider for removal only removes it from that one server's retention cache, but not any others. It is possible for a special post cancellation message to be distributed to remove it from all servers, but many providers ignore cancel messages by standard policy, because they can be easily falsified and submitted by anyone.[23][24] For a takedown petition to be most effective across the whole network, it would have to be issued to the origin server to which the content has been posted, but has not yet been propagated to other servers. Removal of the content at this early stage would prevent further propagation, but with modern high speed links, content can be propagated as fast as it arrives, allowing no time for content review and takedown issuance by copyright holders.[25]
Establishing the identity of the person posting illegal content is equally difficult due to the trust-based design of the network. Like SMTP email, servers generally assume the header and origin information in a post is true and accurate. However, as in SMTP email, Usenet post headers are easily falsified so as to obscure the true identity and location of the message source.[26] In this manner, Usenet is significantly different from modern P2P services; most P2P users distributing content are typically immediately identifiable to all other users by their network address, but the origin information for a Usenet posting can be completely obscured and unobtainable once it has propagated past the original server.[27]
Also unlike modern P2P services, the identity of the downloaders is hidden from view. On P2P services a downloader is identifiable to all others by their network address. On Usenet, the downloader connects directly to a server, and only the server knows the address of who is connecting to it. Some Usenet providers do keep usage logs, but not all make this logged information casually available to outside parties such as the RIAA.[28][29]

Re: Anyone?!!!!
Usernet in free mode is not as fast and many times by mistakes, I did some tests and 50% of errors, we see in the future all
Re: Anyone?!!!!
Please use caution in statements of errors........those errors are from idiots uploading shit and virus crap......since our approach will NOT have ANY issue and label naming convention, just random code numbers, it will be the uploader to ensure they are uploading proper releases for others to find. Usenet is similiar to mIRC, there is plenty of shit, and plenty of goodies....you just have to know what your looking for......and since we are the source of the uploads.....there will be a near chance that we will be near 95% good uploads once everyone becomes used to the system.
yes, the "free" version limits download speeds and your not going to see 2MB/s but it's free.....so for me, this is a non issue. If people want max speed, then let them pay for the needed speed and connections on their own......but I've seen typical 500kB/s and for a normal issue with resume capabilities and error checking.....that is about 4-5 minutes to download a typical 150MB file set......
I've yet to see a download that I was randomly looking for fail thus far.....do you have an example of something you DL'd and failed? Give me a descriptor so I can look into what you mean and we'll find a way to ensure it doesn't happen to us.

Re: Anyone?!!!!
Well the thing is, the files will have names that do not match anything anyone could/would search for. Even if the download the files, they will never be able to open the file itself because all files will be password protected with a 30 digit cypher. It will the worlds fastest computer 475 years to crack it.....So it solidifies that only our group will have any access to the files, and no one else, while protecting all involved.....
The alliance thing REQUIRES that both users are online at the same time and basically share peer 2 peer....that will not work for anyone.....even though there are a few that are online 24/7, but many it seems, have slow connections.....not really a viable option IMO.
